Having observed and interviewed numerous executive directors, board members, and staff members at all levels, I have learned that organizations benefit when leadership flourishes throughout the organization. This happens when everyone has the opportunity to be a leader in his or her own way and to learn from others. When leaders at all levels coach and mentor others, and sometimes each other, the organization truly builds capacity.
It has been well documented that diversity of participants increases innovation. Diversity of leadership – people with differing backgrounds, experiences, and ages and male and female leaders at all levels of the organization – increases the opportunity to identify and solve problems throughout the organization. The research highlights that knowing and interacting with people of other cultures opens your minds and enables you to think in new ways.
When I was facilitating planning sessions for youth leaders in the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts in Poland, the teams agreed to draft plans to meet their most urgent need of getting more parents involved. After an hour, the two girl groups had completed good plans with measurable objectives, specific activities to achieve their objectives, individual responsibilities, and milestone deadlines. One group of boys was making good progress and would soon finish. However, another group of boys was struggling. One of the participants called me over and said, “Ken, what do you do when you have a group of six alpha males who cannot even agree on how to proceed?” I looked over at the two girl groups who had already completed the task and simply replied, “Get a girl facilitator.” Data in many studies have shown that diverse groups are more efficient and more productive. Diversity in a group allows leadership to flourish!
Here are three leadership images created by fundraisers in one of my leadership workshops in Kyiv, Ukraine, shortly after the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution. These images illustrate the leadership responsibilities the participants valued: 1) Nurturing others, 2) Being open, and 3) Finding synergy.
Nurturing Others
The first image, "Nurturing Others," shows a flower being carefully watered. This represents the idea that leadership involves fostering growth and development in others. Just as a plant needs water and care to thrive, people in an organization need support, encouragement, and opportunities to learn and grow. Effective leaders understand the importance of nurturing their team members, providing them with the resources they need to succeed, and helping them develop their skills and abilities.
Being Open
The second image, "Being Open," depicts a smiling face with open doors on either side, one labeled "Open" and the other "Closed." This illustrates the concept that leaders must be open to new ideas, feedback, and perspectives. Openness in leadership means being approachable, listening actively, and valuing the contributions of others. It involves transparency in decision-making and a willingness to embrace change and innovation. An open leader creates an environment where team members feel heard and valued, which fosters trust and collaboration.
Finding Synergy
The third image, "Finding Synergy," is a vibrant depiction of various elements coming together to create energy. This symbolizes the power of synergy in leadership. When leaders are able to bring together diverse talents, perspectives, and ideas, they can create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Synergy in an organization means that team members work together seamlessly, leveraging their individual strengths to achieve common goals. It involves effective communication, collaboration, and a shared sense of purpose.
I was impressed with the leadership levels of the participants, and when I commented on this to my Ukrainian colleague, she simply said, “They saw their friends shot and killed by their government. They had to grow their leadership quickly.” Shocked, I saw again that experience makes leaders.
These images and the stories behind them highlight the importance of nurturing others, being open, and finding synergy in effective leadership. By embracing these values, leaders at all levels can contribute to the growth and success of their organizations. Leadership is not just about holding a position of authority; it is about the actions and attitudes that inspire and empower others. Through nurturing, openness, and synergy, we can build stronger, more resilient organizations capable of making a positive impact in the world
Conclusion
Leadership is a dynamic and evolving process that benefits greatly from diversity, openness, and a commitment to nurturing others. As demonstrated by the fundraisers in Kyiv, the challenges they faced and the leadership values they embraced are universal lessons for all organizations. By focusing on nurturing others, being open, and finding synergy, leaders at all levels can foster a culture of growth, innovation, and collaboration.
These principles are not only relevant in times of crisis but are essential for the ongoing development and success of any organization. As we continue to navigate the complexities of our modern world, let us remember the power of diverse leadership and the importance of fostering an environment where everyone has the opportunity to lead and learn. Embrace these values, and you will help build a stronger, more resilient organization capable of making a lasting positive impact.
